There are many reasons why the Rodney district, located just north of Auckland, is undergoing a mini construction boom.

In recent years there’s been an ‘urban drift’ northward - with many Aucklanders drawn to the region’s stunning landscapes, relaxed coastal vibe, and attractive real estate prices. The newly-developed motorway access offers a manageable commute into downtown Auckland, making the area very appealing for those seeking that elusive work-life balance.

It is little wonder that Rob McEwan, Refresh Renovation’s Rodney branch owner, has been kept very busy since joining in mid-2017. His area covers all of Rodney and Kaipara; from the Muriwai coast up to Dargaville, across to Mangawhai and down to his home base of Whangaparaoa.

“It’s a fairly large area to cover, and there is no shortage of building activity going on. When I first started this branch, I clocked up around 30,000 kliometres in the first seven months..!”

The area also offers plenty of variety when it comes to renovation projects – whether it’s giving new life to older holiday homes, or adding value to the permanent homes.

“Many locals are choosing to use their equity to upgrade or extend; and in some cases, they’ve decided to turn their holiday home into their permanent home.”

There are also several large subdivision developments in the Rodney region, some of which are now up to 10 years old; and many of those owners are now looking to upgrade their bathrooms and kitchens.

Given all the construction activity in Rodney, builders and associated trades are in hot demand. Another big advantage of using Refresh Renovations is that Rob has a trusted network of qualified builders and tradies at his disposal.

“Trying to coordinate everything yourself can be a tricky dance. Our experience allows us to streamline all the different elements, and get the renovation completed with minimal disruption.”

Efficiently managing the council compliance is another area where Rob can save his clients a lot of time and effort. His area is within both the Kaipara District and Auckland Council regions, meaning that Rob often liaises with both.

When it comes to project management, Rob brings a unique mix of skills to the table.

His diverse background includes dairy farming in Palmerston North, policing in Auckland, the finance sector in London, and previously, a senior management position within the wellness industry. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, and a Diploma in Police Studies from Massey University.

Rob’s family has always been involved in the construction and quantity surveying industry; and it was a natural fit that he would eventually return to his roots and get involved with Refresh.

Today, Rob lives with his family in Whangaparaoa. He enjoys getting involved with the local community; and is a gold sponsor of the Hibiscus Coast Waterpolo club, and a local 12th grade football team.

“It’s a fantastic community up here. It’s not so small that everybody knows everybody…but it probably is just a few degree of separation!”
